Knowledge really is power in fitness terms so do yourself a favour and get studying.

Like many fitness enthusiasts, you may have gained your knowledge of exercise and nutrition from chatting to experienced friends, reading insightful online blogs, and watching inspiring videos on YouTube. Many of these sources of information are quite credible and, along with a comprehensive gym induction and/or advice from coaches and trainers, are likely to provide a very solid base for you to work from in setting goals, performing exercises and propagating development.

However, it is important to note that many of the aforementioned sources of information often provide relatively generalised advice. Whilst this will be more than adequate to get you started off on the right foot, it may well fall down a little when the time comes to step things up a gear. This is because most basic fitness-related strategies, theories and exercises are considered basic for the simple reason that they will have very similar effects on a wide range of the population. When it comes to dealing with more advanced facets of fitness however, it is a fact that what may work wonders for one person’s body may not necessarily have the same effect on yours.

This is where learning about relevant topics like exercise physiology and nutrition can be invaluable. Rather than get frustrated because generalised tips aren’t enabling you to make the gains you want to see, you can instead find out why your body isn’t responding and endeavour to formulate (or discover) a strategy that will yield results. For example, finding out what kind of body shape you are (endomorph, mesomorph, or ectomorph) and swotting up on how each one responds to exercise and nutrition will help you to determine which exercise regimes and diets are – and aren’t – most likely to pay dividends.
