When sweet temptation comes calling, even the strongest struggle to resist, step away from the pick and mix…

Few situations cannot be made better with a bag of our favourite sweets; from enjoying a movie
to enduring a car journey, from watching the sports to wishing away an afternoon at work. Sadly, once the bag has gone (and who doesn’t finish the whole bag?), we’re left with nothing more than a stomach full of empty calories and a sugar crash to look forward to. In addition, many of the sweets in stores contain nasty sweeteners and corn syrup, while some ingredients aren’t even suitable for vegetarians!

Nothing can really satisfy a sugar craving like more sugar, yet if we substitute processed sweets with dried fruit, we can still enjoy a sweet snack, and also a whole host of health benefits. While dried fruits often contain around the same number of calories as their candy counterparts, they will also provide you with as much as double the amount of protein, vitamins – notably A and C – and minerals such as iron, magnesium, potassium and calcium. Perhaps the biggest advantage that dried fruit has over sweets (and many other foods too) is that it is naturally high in dietary fibre to keep your gut happy and your digestion in good working order.

Be sure to measure out your portions properly to avoid overindulgence; 30g is plenty. It may not seem like much at first, but fruit satisfies you much more than a full bag of candy – and your belly will thank you for it.
